Meet The Partners: IMEC

About IMEC
IMEC is a globally recognized research and innovation center in nanoelectronics and digital technologies, headquartered in Leuven, Belgium. Known for its strong track record in ICT and software research, IMEC’s capabilities span the full data value chain—from data enrichment and semantic representation to cloud-native application development.
IDLab — a Ghent University group within IMEC — conducts pioneering research in internet technologies and data science. It is a prominent contributor to the Semantic Web community and plays a central role in developing Solid, a data-sharing framework for sensitive private data. IMEC’s active role in W3C and standardization efforts underscores its leadership in creating secure, privacy-aware data infrastructures.
What is their role in the DS4Skills project?
In the DS4SKILLS project, IMEC brings its technical depth to Use Case 6: Connecting personal skills-data to the Data Space. The goal is to establish a secure and standards-based connection between Athumi’s data ecosystem and the EU Skills Data Space, allowing trusted data consumers across Europe to access verified personal skills data.
IMEC supports technical architecture through its work on semantic technologies, distributed data sharing, and Solid-compatible infrastructures. This ensures a privacy-by-design approach that’s scalable, interoperable, and aligned with EU data strategy principles.
This use case will make it easier for students to access services across borders, streamline recruitment processes, and reduce the risk of credential fraud. Tech firms, businesses, and public institutions all stand to benefit from greater trust and interoperability in skills data exchanges.
In close collaboration with Athumi, IMEC is helping shape a more transparent and secure European data landscape.
